What is WEAT?

WEAT (Workshop for Ethno-Architectural Techniques) are events organised by members of the IVA-ICRA (Institute for comparative Research in Architecture), TU-Vienna during which traditional building- and craft-techniques are demonstrated and taught to students and interested people in general.

We try to focus on practical education during which it is possible for everyone to try traditional techniques like building with clay and earth, wood carving, building with wood, reed and other natural materials, felt making, etc.

Everybody, even without special skills or knowledge of any kind in the fields of Architecture, Ethnology or Arts can learn these techniques, most of them are even suited for children. A very important aspect of our work is to inspire and show people that they are able to work easily with natural materials, give them an understanding for the importance of "tradition" in the sense of a cultural heritage which is more and more endagered and lost in today´s consumer society.
The issue of recycling (building)materials after use is especially important - objects made with traditional techniques can last for a long time, but can usually always be recycled with minimal effort. Actually most of the have to be "cared" for - for example a clay-plastered wall has to be renewed in one or two years time, else rain and weather will ruin it. The plastering can be also removed at any time, and then it is not more than simple clay....

On this site we have collected some images about are activities, to give some idea what "traditional techniques" are about. We hope You will enjoy looking through our gallery....
